Card expiration: the most predictable failed payment
Of all the ways a subscription payment fails, one stands out: the card on file expired. It's the most common single cause of failed recurring charges, and, uniquely, the only one you can predict. Every card has a printed expiration date, which means you know in advance exactly when a payment is at risk. Most businesses do nothing with that knowledge, and lose the customer to a lapse that was entirely foreseeable.
Why expired cards are so common
Cards expire on a fixed cycle, and people rarely update their saved payment methods proactively. Add reissued cards (lost, stolen, or upgraded), and a meaningful share of your active subscribers are carrying a card that will stop working on a known future date. When it does, the charge fails, the subscription lapses, and the customer, who never chose to leave, is gone over a piece of plastic that timed out.
The one failure you can prevent, not just recover
Most failed payments you can only react to: the charge fails, then you try to recover it. Expired cards are different. Because the date is known ahead of time, you can get in front of the failure entirely. A pre-dunning warning sent before the renewal, prompting the customer to update a card that's about to expire, prevents the failed charge from ever happening. Recovery you never had to chase is the cheapest and highest-converting kind, because you're reaching a customer while their subscription is still healthy, not after it's broken.
What good expired-card handling looks like
- Identify cards approaching expiration before the next charge, not after it fails.
- Send a clear, friendly heads-up with a one-click way to update payment.
- For cards that fail anyway, follow up promptly with a recovery sequence, not a single email.
- Keep the tone helpful. The customer isn't a deadbeat; their card just timed out.
Where Stripe's retries fall short here
Stripe's Smart Retries will re-attempt a charge after an expired card fails, and card-updater services can sometimes refresh a reissued card automatically. Both help. But neither warns the customer before the expiration, and neither runs a human-readable sequence that makes updating a card effortless when automatic refresh isn't available. Recoupe adds that pre-dunning warning and recovery layer on top of Stripe, turning the most predictable failure into the most preventable one.

Recoupe recovers the revenue your processor's retries leave behind $29/mo, honest attribution.
