Expired card emails: recover the payment before it fails

Every other recovery tactic starts after money failed to arrive. Pre-dunning starts before: cards carry expiry dates, so you know months in advance exactly which subscriptions are about to break. One email prevents the whole mess.

Why it outperforms dunning

A pre-expiry warning lands while the customer's relationship with you is neutral-to-positive no failed charge, no service interruption, no guilt. Update rates are meaningfully higher than post-failure recovery, and the customer experience is 'this company is on top of things' instead of 'my access is at risk.'

The email that works

Subject: your card on file expires this month. "Hi {first name} the card you use for {product} ({last four}) expires at the end of {month}. Thirty seconds now saves a failed charge later: {update link}. That's all everything else is running fine." Send once, roughly 30 days out. One reminder maximum; never a sequence.

The mechanics

Stripe exposes card expiry on saved payment methods, and its hosted update page handles the card entry you never touch card data. What Stripe doesn't do is send the warning. Recoupe checks every night for cards expiring within 30 days and sends exactly one warning per expiry, under your brand name.
