Square failed payment recovery: the guide nobody wrote
Search for failed-payment recovery and every guide assumes Stripe. But plenty of small SaaS and service businesses bill through Square Invoices or Square Subscriptions and the leak works exactly the same way: 5–10% of recurring revenue dying to expired cards and declines.
What Square gives you
Square automatically retries failed subscription charges on its own schedule and marks invoices past-due. Square Invoices have a hosted payment page the equivalent of Stripe's hosted invoice where a customer can pay with a new card. What's missing is the same thing missing on Stripe: a human-sounding email sequence that actually gets the customer to that page, tuned to why the payment failed.
The recovery loop on Square
- Detect the failure the moment the invoice goes past-due (webhooks)
- Email the customer within the hour, linking Square's hosted payment page
- Follow up 2–3 times over two weeks, stopping instantly on payment
- Track which invoices your emails recovered vs Square's own retries
Tooling reality
Most recovery tools are Stripe-only Churnkey and Baremetrics Recover both sit on Stripe's API. Recoupe added native Square support in July 2026: OAuth connect, past-due detection, decline-aware sequences linking Square's hosted pay page, and the same honest attribution ledger. Same $29/mo flat.
Recoupe recovers the revenue your processor's retries leave behind $29/mo, honest attribution.
